During holidays, everybody try don’t think about job. I try every time, but very often something push my mind to think about RFID. This is what happened in my Christmas holiday.
I was watching an enduro race and like a flash I saw a clever RFID application during this international race.
For who doesn’t know Enduro is defined by Wikipedia as a form of motorcycle sport run on courses that are mostly off-road. Enduro consists of many different obstacles and challenges. The main type of enduro event, and the format to which the World Enduro Championship is run, is a time-card enduro, whereby a number of stages are raced in a time trial against the clock.
So I was there watching enthusiastic the race, the first driver was going fast into a very difficult racetrack. After a section into the forest, the driver arrived to the checkpoint and obviously the judges were waiting him, ready to stop the clock, identify the driver and the motorbike, save the section-time and the IDs. After those operations the driver could start the following race section.
Everything looked normal, except for the reader handled by the judge. Yes an RFID UHF reader!
The driver arrived to the checkpoint, the judge put the reader near the plastic windscreen and immediately he released the racer, who fully opened the throttle and flew away into the next race section.
Everything seemed to be very quick and clean.
I knew that RFID is used into other speed motorace competions lile Formula1 or MotoGP to track and trace tyres but I didn’t know its enduro race application.
I think it’s a clever application, because this technology borned to track and trace every product has a tag RFID attached. It’s not a problem if this time isn’t a pallet or a box to be tracked, this technology is the best to do that even track and trace motorbikes into an enduro race.
The efficiency in the checkpoint stages increase immediately due to:
- speed up racer identify operations;
- speed up saving racer’s times;
- reduce human mistakes;
- speed up data transmission between checkpoints and main system;
- tracking and tracing immediately each racer.
I couldn’t understand many about RFID hardware used during the competition, I just saw a typical rugged UHF reader.
Surely I will search for some more infos about this application.
